Communications Specialist

Job Title: Communications Specialist (Communications & Technology)

Job Description: The Communications Specialist is responsible for supporting the Director of Communications in building community support through regular, planned and strategic communications. In addition this position is responsible for assisting with projects related to the design and production of marketing materials, including design, layout and production of print collateral materials for Zion Elementary District 6, assisting with social media efforts, website content updates, school events and support of the communication plan.
Primary Responsibilities:
Draft press releases and generate news stories that support the District 6 brand;
Proofreading of print and electronic media postings
Strategize, coordinate and update district website content and multimedia to support the communications plan
Utilize technologies including websites, social media, video, etc. to expand the district brand and innovatively reach stakeholders
Assist with the promotion of school news, events and accomplishments through various media including local newspaper outlets, publications, websites, and social media
Provide crisis communications support as needed, including utilization/management of the SchoolMessenger notification system and other alerts
Collaborate with local press to promote stories, support articles and arrange photos
Monitor media coverage and social media outlets; track and provide notifications; report generation, respond as needed
Assist in the design, drafting and production management of publications including parent and community newsletters
Support internal communication efforts
Assist in planning major district/school events
Take and coordinate photos and videos as needed; manage district archives
Share information with various community groups and represent the district at strategic functions/events
Assist with department clerical support
Other duties as assigned by the Director of Communications and Instructional Program Management
Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor's Degree with concentration in public relations, communications, journalism, graphic design, marketing, or electronic media. Master's Degree in concentration preferred.
2+ years computer application experience required
2+ years professional work experience preferred
2+ years Google Apps for Education preferred
Social media management preferred
Previous experience in public relations, journalism, graphic design or communications preferred
Knowledge:
Enhanced knowledge of Adobe products is essential
Content development for print and electronic media
Understanding of social media platforms
Video production (preferred)
Very strong communication, organization and teamwork skills required
Task management skills to effectively multi-manage a minimum of 3-5 projects simultaneously
Strong writing skills with attention to spelling, content and message
Committed work ethic
Enthusiastic approach to developing stories
Ability to quickly adapt to new computer applications
Ability to curate information to create effective messaging documents/artifacts
Ability to participate in weekend or evening event commitments as needed
Ability to communicate (verbal and written)
Ability to communicate with co-workers, students, and parents/community members effectively
Ability to maintain emotional control under stress
Work Environment
Must be able to work within various degrees of noise, temperature, and air quality. Interruptions of work are routine. Flexibility and patience are required. Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignment without direct supervision. After-hour work may be required. May make site or home visits when needed and appropriate. Must be able to work under stressful conditions.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
